- About Book:
The Design Data book was in essence the brainchild of Prof. G.R.Damodaran, one of the great educational visionaries and institution builders of post independent India. He had dedicated himself to the cause of education especially in the fields of Engineering, Technology and Management and had made unparalleled contributions to educational development both qualitative and quantitative while nurturing the PSG Group of Institutions as outstanding centers of educational excellence in the country. He made pioneering efforts for reorganizing and developing Technical and Management Education at the all India level as Chairman of several Committees and boards constituted by the Gove. of India.
Stimulated by Prof. G.R. Damodaran’s intellectual inspiration, motivation, encouragement and support, the then faculty members of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, PSG college of Technology, came out with the compilation of the Design Data book in 1968 to provide a realistic understanding of the engineering design processes.
Design of an engineering product is made with the intention of ultimately manufacturing it economically. Modern design and manufacturing techniques in engineering place great emphasis on the completeness and clarity of information contained in the drawings and on the maximum use of standard components in the design. Sufficient attention, in the design stages, on the details regarding attainable geometric positions and dimensional tolerances, the selection of proper materials and the process of heat treatment and designing components with minimum machining involved, is often found to result in substantial reduction in the cost of production. It is with this objective, the re-edited version of the Design Data Book has been brought out by the Publishers.
