About Book:

The twenty-first century business environment can be characterized by expanding global competition and products of increasing variety and lower demand. Computer Integrating Manufacturing (CIM) is considered as a key competitive strategy for manufacturing enterprises to achieve this. Infact, the importance of the subject, CIM has made me to write a book on it.

            This textbook is written in tune with the latest syllabus of Anna University and I have taken the syllabus as a guide for the organization of this book. Every attempt has been made to highlight and unfold the scope and purpose of the new syllabus.

This text is written in a simple and easy-to-follow language, so that even an average student can grasp the subject by self-study. Every effort has been made to support the text with clear, labeled illustrations. As far as possible I have striven to make every chapter complete by itself.

The author’s responsibility here is to stress abundantly that he lays no claim to the original research in preparing this book. Many of the subject matters that are available in the works of eminent authors have been made freely. Perhaps what I may claim, in all modesty is that I have tried to fashion the vast amount of materials available from primary and secondary sources into coherent body of description and analysis.

First I thank the students and fellow teachers of the subject for their magnificent response to the first edition of the book. Due to recent changes in the syllabus of Anna University, it becomes essential to revise this text. Therefore this edition is thoroughly revised and enlarged so as to meet the requirements of the students to a larger extent.

In this new edition, a unit (Unit-1) on ‘Computer Aided Design’ has been added newly; several sections on CIM have been added and edited in Unit-2; and the concepts of Lean and Agile manufacturing, structure model of manufacturing, process control strategies and direct digital control have been newly added in Unit-5.

With all these modifications, I hope that this book will serve the requirements of the students and fellow teachers. Any suggestion will be gratefully accepted.
