PREFACE
This book is written to serve the needs of under graduate students embarking introductory course in Maintenance Engineering. Practically, every modern engineering system encompasses the Maintenance Engineering.
Therefore, study of Maintenance Engineering requires multidisciplinary approach. This book is designed to meet with the requirement of revised syllabus prescribed by the Anna University (Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore,Tirunelveli) effective from June 2007 for 8 semester Mechanical engineering and Production engineering (elective) students of its affiliated colleges.
This book consists of 5 units.
Unit 1 deals a basic Principles of maintenance planning, Objectives and principles of planned maintenance activity, Importance and benefits of sound Maintenance systems, Reliability and machine availability, MTBF, MTTR and MWT, Factors of availability, Maintenance organization and Maintenance economics.
Unit 2 discusses Maintenance categories, Preventive maintenance, maintenance schedules, repair cycle, Principles and methods of lubrication and TPM.
Unit 3 addresses the representation of Condition Monitoring, Cost comparison with and without CM, On-load testing and off-load testing, Methods and instruments for CM, T’emperature sensitive tapes, Pistol thermometers and wear-debris analysis
Unit 4 provides repair methods for beds, slideways, spindles, gears, lead screws and bearings, Failure analysis, Failures and their development, Logical fault location methods and sequential fault location.
Unit 5 illustrates repair methods for Material handling equipment, Equipment records, Job order systems and use of computers in maintenance.
Each unit begins with introduction and learning objectives. Topics are then divided into labeled section containing explanation, example, and where appropriate practical applications are also given. Each chapter ends with two marks Q&A and several review questions.
Solved Anna University question papers are added at the tail end of this book to enable the students to score high marks. With these features, we sincerely hope that this book would serve as a valuable text for the students.
Though efforts have been taken aiming at a zero flaw content, we do recognize that mistakes may have inadvertently crept in. We welcome constructive criticisms on any specific topics of this book.
