We are pleased to bring out our fully revised sixth edition “Design of Machine Elements” book for Engineering and Technology studies. This book is based on the latest syllabi prescribed by the Anna University Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore & Tirunelveli for 5th Semester Mechanical, Automobile and Mechatronics engineering students of its affiliated colleges.
Unit 1 deals with basic steady and variable stresses in machine members in which factor influencing machine design, selection of materials based on mechanical properties, preferred numbers, fits and tolerances, direct, bending and torsional stress equations, impact and shock, eccentric loading, design of curved beams, theories of failure are discussed. Elaborate treatment of analytical and theoretical nature is. provided in all topics.
Unit 2 has an in-depth dealing of design of solid and hollow shafts based on strength, rigidity and critical speed, design of keys and keyways, design of rigid and flexible couplings.
Unit 3 deals with the design of threaded fasteners, design of joints, knuckle joints, cotter joints, design of welded and 1 riveted joint for structures and theory of bonded joints.
Design of different types of springs under constant Variable bonding, design of flywheels considering stresses in rims and arms for engines and punching machines, design of connecting rods and crank shafts have been discussed in Unit 4.
Design of sliding contact and rolling contact bearings, design of hydrodynamic journal bearings, Sommerfeld number, Raimondi and Boyd graphs, selection of rolling contact bearings are treated elaborately with good solved examples in Unit 5.
Important solved problems and past examination Anna University question paper’s solved problems have been added in each unit which will enable the students to score high marks in the University examinations. In addition to this, two mark questions and answers are added at the tail end of each unit.
