Preface to the Second Edition
Like the first edition, this second edition also deals with the fundamentals of electrical drives. The main changes that have been incorporated are: (a) Portions on semiconductor controlled drives have been expanded, (6) Permanent magnet ac motor drives and switched reluctance motor drives have been included and (c) New trends in drive technology have been incorporated.
The book is most suitable for an undergraduate course in electrical drives as earlier. But with the abovementioned changes, it is also suitable for a postgraduate course in electrical drives. Contents are also chosen according to the needs of industry-a right mix of modern and conventional drives. There is adequate coverage of dynamics and control of electrical drives; selection of motor ratings; starting braking and transient operations and speed control of dc motor, induction motor, synchronous motor, permanent magnet ac motor, brushless de motor, stepper motor and switched reluctance motor drives. Semiconductor controlled drives employing various motors have been described with adequate details, including closed loop drives and some recent advances.
The book, as in the earlier edition, includes drives powered from solar cells and battery; traction drives including modern ac drives; energy conservation in electrical drives; and details of complete drive systems. Topics such as solar power drives, modern traction drives and energy conservation in electrical drives were covered in the first edition for the first time considering current and future requirements of the industry. They have been retained and modern traction ac drive employing synchronous link converter included.
A large number of solved examples and unsolved problems with answers are included to help reader to get clear understanding of analysis and design methods, and performance features of electrical drives.
