PREFACE TO THE SEVENTH EDITION
The aim of this book is to present to the students, teachers and practising engineers, a comprehensive collection of various material property data and formulae in the field of heat and mass transfer. The material is organized in such a way that a reader who has gone through engineering curriculum could easily use the formulae and data presented in heat transfer calculations. Hence this compilation, intended as an adjunct to a standard text, serves as a quick reference for both the students and practising engineers in the field.
Considerable space has been devoted to property values of materials – solids, liquids and gases-that are commonly used in heat transfer situations. Property values for various materials at different temperatures are also given. They have been arranged in alphabetical order for quick reference with additions to the earlier edition.
The tabular form of presentation of the formulae with symbols, units, the limitations and restrictions in the use of empirical relationships explained alongside, has been retained, as several favourable comments have been received on this point. The empirical formulae and charts have been selected with a view of presenting information with clarity to facilitate straight forward use.
As far as possible, suggestions received since the appearance of the sixth edition have been incorporated in the new edition. A number of charts have been redrawn or added to improve clarity. To avoid ambiguity, property values have been tabulated fully without multiplication factors in the column heading.
