About Book:
Economic downturn has hit industries, companies and functions within organizations. The roost hit of the functions appears to be human resource management (HRM) Employee hiring has been halted, budge on training and development has been hacked, employees have been laid off, salaries have been slashed and perks such as cab facility to and from office have been withdrawn All these happenings are visible, talked of, and have hit headlines in newspapers and TV channels. Surprisingly, similar happenings in other functional areas are not highlighted at all. How cash flows have been managed, how profits are shown in balance sheets, how products with wrong specifications are shipped, how foreign and dirty articles are discovered in shipped packages, and the like are never points of discussion in conversation
But HRM all must become the most happening department in the organization. In fact during times as these HR managers should play a proactive role. Be it maintaining employee morale, cutting down on overheads, must become the most happening department in organizations. In fact, during times like these, encouraging innovation, enhancing skills of employees or saving jobs, the role of HR professional should become critical. Till now, HR activities have been described in books, articles and in classrooms, keeping boom periods as the background. This is the first time after the Depression of the 1930s that economies of all the countries have taken a severe beating. And it is the first time that HR managers all over the world are confronting the challenge (HRM in its present form did not exist during Depression) of contributing to the revival of fortunes of organizations
Revival of fortunes of organizations is a challenge which the HR executives should accept and face squarely. This is the time when the HR manager is required to have a relook at his or her role in the organization. It is the most appropriate time for any executive, an academic or a student to look at HRM from a different perspective. And this is the right time to read the sixth edition of Human Resource Management
