This book is Written to serve the needs of under graduate students embarking introductory course in Power Plant Engineering. This book is designed to meet the requirement of revised syllabus prescribed by the Anna University Chennai, Trichy, Coimbatore & Tirunelveli for 5″ Semester EEE and 7 Semester Mechanical Engineering studenis of its affiliated colleges. This text has been formed in a crisp and clear style to enable the students in understanding the concepts easily.
Unit I deals with the Basic thermodynamic cycles, various components of steam power plant, pulverized coal burners, fluidized bed combustion, coal handling systems, ash handling systems, forced draft and induced draft fans, boilers, turbines, feed pumps, super heater, regenerator, condenser, cooling tower, feed water treatment,binary cycles and cogeneration systems.
Unit II has an in depth dealing of diesel, gas turbine and combined cycle power plants along with the Otto, Diesel, Dual & Brayton Cycle analyses.
Unit III deals with the principles of nuclear energy, fission reactions, nuclear reactor, nuclear power plants and its safety aspects.
The first part of Unit 1 contains classification, layout and components of hydroelectric power plants. The second part contains principle, construction and working of renewable energy systems such as wind, tidal, solar photo voltaic (SPV), solar thermal, geo thermal, biogas and fuel cell power systems.
Power tariff types, load distribution parameters, load curve, comparison of site selection criteria, relative merits & demerits, capital & operating cost of different power plants, pollution control technologies including waste disposal options for coal and nuclear power plants are elaborately discussed in Unit V.
