PREFACE
We are immensely pleased to bring out this book Power Plant Engineering for the 4 semester Electrical and Electronics Engineering Students as per the latest syllabi prescribed by the Anna University.This text has been formed in a crisp and clear style to enable the students in understanding the concepts and solved problems.
Unit 1 deals with the Basic thermodynamic cycles, various components of steam power plant, pulverized coal burners, Fluidized bed combustion, coal handling systems, ash handling systems, Forced draft and induced draft fans, Boilers, feed pumps, super heater,regenerator, condenser, dearearators and cooling tower are discussed in detail.
Unit II has an in depth dealing of layout of hydel power plants,dams, selection of water turbines, and pumped storage hydel plants.
Unit III deals with the principles of nuclear energy, Fission reactions, nuclear reactor, and nuclear power plants.
In Unit IV, The first part contains types, open and closed cycle gas turbine, work output & thermal etficiency, methods to improve performance-reheating, inter-cooling, regeneration. The second part contains diesel engine power plant, component and layout.
Solar energy collectors, OTEC, wind power plants, tidal power plants and geothermal resources, fuel cell, MHD power generation, thermoelectric power generation, and thermionic power generation are treated elaborately in UnitV.
Each unit has two mark questions and answers, and revieW questions from examination question papers of various Universities.
With these features, we sincerely hope that this book would serve as a valuable text for the students.
