PREFACE

The importance of testing of materials is well known in various engineering fields. We are pleased to bring out our first edition of “Testing of materials” book for various Engineering streams. This book covers the latest syllabus prescribed by Anna University, Chennai for VII Semester students of affiliated colleges.

This book elaborates the basic and advanced concepts of various destructive & non-destructive testing methods of materials with its industrial applications. Each chapter is well-supported with detailed explanations. This makes the understanding of this subject clearer and makes it more interesting. This book is written with simple text which can reach all students. This whole book has versatile five units linked with the common concept of material testing.

Unit I Introduces basics of testing, Testing standards, Purpose of testing and Testing standards and organization.

In unit II, The Mechanical testing includes Hardness testing, Tensile testing, Impact testing, Bend testing, Shear testing, Creep testing and Fatigue testing is detailed.

The different types of Non-Destructive testing methods are discussed in unit III. Also, it exposed the step by step procedure of testing with clear explanation.

Unit IV explains various material characterization testing methods with its merits and demerits of usage.

In Unit V, The chapter gives detailed information about thermal testing and chemical testing.

Each unit contains two mark questions with answers and review questions, which will enable the students to achieve high marks in university examinations. With these features, we sincerely hope that this book would serve as a valuable text for the students.
