PREFACE

We are pleased to bring out our fifth edition of the book “Thermal Engineering” for Engineering and Technology studies.

This book is crafted to meet the requirement of revised syllabus prescribed by the Anna University Chennai effective from June 2010 for 5th Semester Mechanical Engineering students of its affiliated colleges.

Chapter 1 covers the Otto, Diesel, Dual, Brayton cycles.Calculation of mean effective pressure and air standard efficiency, actual and theoretical PV diagrams of four stroke and two stroke engines.

Chapter 2 has an in depth dealing of classification of I.C engines,four stroke and two stroke cycle engines, timing diagrams, super-charging, ignition system and fuel injection system, Engine tests performance, heat balance, retardation and Morse test.

Chapter 3 deals with steam nozzles, flow through steam nozzles,effect of friction, critical pressure ratio, super saturated flow, steam turbines- impulse and reaction turbine, compounding, velocity diagram,condition for maximum efficiency, multi stage turbines, conditional lines, cycles with reheating and regenerating heating, reheat factor,degree of reaction, governing of turbines. Anna University solved problems have been added under this chapter.

Chapter 4 covers the classifications of compressors, reciprocating air compressor performance characteristics, effect of clearance.

Volume, free air delivery and displacement, intercooler, after cooler,rotary compressor, vane type, centrifugal and axial, flow performance characteristics and performance characteristics.

Chapter 5 deals the fundamentals of refrigeration, COP, vapour Compression refrigeration system, cycle, p-h chart, vapour absorption system, comparison, properties of refrigerants, fundamentals of air Conditioning system, cycle, simple cooling and heat load estimation.

In addition to this, two mark questions &answers and review questions are added at the tail end of each unit.

Though efforts have been taken aiming at a ‘zero flaw content, we do recognize that mistakes may have inadvertently crept in. We welcome constructive criticisms on any specific topics of this book.
