PREFACE TO THE FIFTH EDIION

The authors are extremely thankful to the teachers and students who have given whole hearted support to this text for the last 25-years.

The purpose of the present edition remained unchanged except the content is thoroughly revised and amplified wherever the authors felt necessary. This edition is totally converted into Sl-units looking into the needs of students.

Each chapter is thoroughly checked, modified and necessary additions and deletions are made in the present edition

Presently, world increased rate of population and increasing demand of power for better life have put sufficient load on the present resources and heavy load of pollution on the atmosphere. A new pollution threat is Green House Effect, therefore, a separate chapter on Green House Effect is added which is the talk of the day.

To prolong the use of present coal, oil and gas resources, enough research is carried out throughout the World, to operate the plants more effectively and reduce the losses as maximum as possible. All these aspects are very well taken in the present edition.

As extensive updated bibliography (upto 2001) is included at the end of the text which will be useful to the students, teachers, engineers and research workers working in the field of Power Engineering.
