PREFACE FOR BASIC CIVIL ENGINEERING

This book has been written to provide a concise textbook covering the revised syllabus of all Anna Universities in Tamil Nadu for the Civil Engineering part of Basic Civil and Mechanical Engineering course. It will be useful not only to the first year BE students, but also to the Diploma and AMIE students. It will also serve as a good reference material for those preparing for competitive examinations.

This book is presented in a simple, but comprehensive manner. Solved problems and illustrative diagrams have been included to explain the various concepts. Exercises are appended at the end of each chapter to provide adequate practice to the students and to help them comprehend the subject.

The book is divided into two parts–Part 1 covering Basic Civil Engineering and Part 2 covering Basic Mechanical Engineering. Part 1 has eight chapters which deal with the topics of Surveying, Civil Engineering Materials, Foundation, Simple Stresses and Strains, Superstructure, Dams, Bridges, and Basics of Interior Design and Landscaping. New content have been added in many chapters and a new chapter in Interior Design and landscaping has been included in the revised edition to meet the requirement of the entire new syllabus of all Anna universities.
