About Book:

The new edition of the Oxford Handbook of General Practice seems to come round quicker each time, yet so much has changed in general practice in the past five years. For this edition, we welcome Francoise van Dorp as a guest editor. She has a special interest in child health within primary care.

When the second edition of the OHGP went to press, the new GP contract for British GPs was in its infancy. This contract has now become established and evolved in many ways. Furthermore, other contracting arrangements have been introduced and the idea of ‘super-practices’ run by private health providers is now a reality. This edition of the OHGP has been updated to include these developments. The general practice section (now edged purple) has been split so that information on different aspects of non-clinical general practice can be more easily accessed.

Since the last edition of the OHGP, medical training has changed considerable. In the UK, GPs in training now have to sit a new MRCGP examination to graduate as fully-fledged GPs. Foundation level doctors have also started placements in primary care. We now include specific reference to the requirements that both these groups face and their needs within general practice.
