We are pleased to bring out our fully revised eleventh edition of “Power Plant Engineering”. This book is written to serve the needs of undergraduate students embarking introductory course in Power Plant Engineering. This book is designed to meet the requirement of revised syllabus prescribed by the Anna University Chennai Trichy, Coimbatore & Tirunelveli for 5th Semester EEE and 7th Semester Mechanical Engineering students of its affiliated colleges. This text has been formed in a crisp and clear style to enable the students to understand the concepts easily.
Unit I deals with the Basic thermodynamic cycles, various components of steam power plant, pulverized coal burners, fluidized bed combustion, coal handling systems, ash handling systems, forced draft and induced draft fans, boilers, turbines, feed pumps, super heater, regenerator, condenser, cooling tower, feed water treatment, binary cycles and cogeneration systems.
Unit II has an in depth dealing of diesel, gas turbine and combined cycle power plants along with the Otto, Diesel, Dual & Brayton Cycle analyses.
Unit III deals with the principles of nuclear energy, fission reactions, nuclear reactor, nuclear power plants and its safety aspects.
The first part of Unit IV contains classification, layout and components of hydroelectric power plants. The second part contains principle, construction and working of renewable energy systems such as wind, tidal, solar photovoltaic (SPV), solar thermal, geothermal, biogas and fuel cell power systems.
Power tariff types, load distribution parameters, load curve, comparison of site selection criteria, relative merits & demerits, capital & operating cost of different power plants, pollution control technologies including waste disposal options for coal and nuclear power plants are elaborately discussed in Unit V.
Important solved problems and past examination Anna University question paper’s solved problems have been added in each unit which will enable the students to score high marks in the University examinations. In addition to this, two mark questions and answers are added at the tail end of each unit.
With these features, we sincerely hope that this book would serve as a valuable text for the students.
